World Direction
In our 14th season of Apex Legends, we were tasked with revisiting Kings Canyon and giving it a facelift. The designers wanted to address several pain points on the map and bring a bit of extra real estate to it as well. While there were many areas around the map that were addressed, there were 3 main areas of focus for the art team.
First, Marcos Shih rebuilt the Kings Canyon skybox to look better and more vibrant then ever. We even managed to get a baby Leviathan into this update that I had been asking for since Season 8!
Second, Austin Arnett completely relit Kings Canyon to bring it closer to its original time of day, but with improved lighting techniques that gave it a fresh and colorful overhaul.
And finally third, the salvage operation was complete and the original Skulltown leviathan skull was brought back and a whole new town was built around it. This new Relic was given a red paint job to help draw players eyes from the sky as the original skull was just not popping enough from the sand filled bowl that made up the playspace around it. We also decided to frame the main entrance into the zone with red tipped bones to give it a more imposing entrance and celebrate the return of what we internally referred to as Skulltown 2.0. Mine Ulas was tasked with executing on the concept art provided by Aaron Pinel and she nailed it.
Here's to the team that pulled it all together!
