World Direction
The launch of Apex Legends: Eclipse brings our fifth and newest map, Broken Moon. We’re excited to expand the Apex universe by sharing the latest world to host the Apex Games.
A moon shattered. A prophecy fulfilled. A planet forever changed. 26 years have passed since a meteor struck the moon Cleo and altered it in ways never imagined.
The goal when building this map was to demonstrate those phases of development and show how innovation and perseverance can change a landscape–from early lunar expeditions (which studied the damage and put in safeguards against further catastrophe) to advanced terraforming efforts, to the private industry needed to fund such world-changing endeavors. The colony of Hope was established, and workers who braved the new world were free of the restrictions and government oversight that held sway on Boreas. That is, until Duardo Silva and the Apex Games decided to come to Cleo and displace them.
Working with the themes of Heaven and Hell, the team created a contrast between light and dark: a cold, barren, alien wasteland that was the raw moon, versus a wild terraformed landscape under a manufactured pastel sky.
Claude Monet paintings inspired the heavenly side along with lush, wild meadows and English gardens. On the hellish side, we went for a monotone backdrop and used colorful accents such as rust pools and red fungi. The buildings in these areas were deliberately more colorful to allow them to pop from the barren surroundings.
Our newest legend, Catalyst worked on Cleo and mastered the ferrofluid that is processed at the Foundry. We wanted to tell the story of this substance that was being pulled out of the moon itself in order to strengthen and patch its broken parts. You can see elements of this ferrofluid at work in the skybox by Marcos Shih. There we see the stringy ferrofluid at work as well as other story elements like the stasis net that holds all the moon debris in place and the artificial atmosphere filling up the void of space.
Over the course of 18 months of development (1 year of art production), Broken Moon came to light. During that time we grew, learned and bonded into an amazing crew. I'm very proud of this team and am excited about what's coming next.
