Apex Legends: Saviors - Map Update

World Direction

When Storm Point was released in Season 11, the team was already planning its first update and had to find a delicate balance of healthy change without having a great deal of player data yet at their disposal.

For starters, we knew we had a few minor quality of life improvements around the map we wanted to address, but Keith Jensen also pitched a few ideas for introducing a new POI to the map. The clear winner was the washed up sea creature and although some were surprised the art team would sign up for such a daunting task, I knew we could deliver on the fantasy. Brett Marting did the concept for a menacing new creature that needed to look hard and crusty (we were going to be traversing it like we do over rocks), and not overly fleshy or soft (which would have been too grotesque). The team, led by Derek Bentley, proceeded to bring it to life (or in this case death).

As time went on, and the POI developed, we felt reintroducing the ECHO camps from Kings Canyon made sense to help flesh out the surrounding area and tell the story of this team sent to clean up the mess the Legends left behind.

On the side. we also had a cool, new PvE experience that was being developed. The idea of fighting IMC Spectres in an uncovered IMC Armory just felt it belonged on Storm Point. Appropriate locations were chosen to balance the map and we set out with a backstory to design a shuttle and launch pad that emerged from underground. These long buried, unmanned ships needed to look aged and forgotten, but hidden inside was an all new loot type which was a fun design exercise, in and of itself.

Tying the two, seemingly separate scenarios, into a cohesive theme was a collaborative effort with marketing, narrative and the maps team. The notion that an old security protocol was triggered by the beast and caused the Armories to rise up, was a story everyone could get behind and it delivered an exciting trailer that helped introduce our newest legend, Newcastle.
